The heroic warrior He-Man battles against the evil lord Skeletor and his armies of darkness for control of Castle Grayskull.
On the planet Eternia, the dark lord Skeletor has taken over Castle Greyskull, and imprisoned the Sorceress, and Skeletor has begun draining the Sorceress' powers as he attempts to claim the powers of Greyskull and become master of the universe. Mighty warrior He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe and his companions: loyal soldier Man-at-Arms, his daughter Teela and a dwarf inventor named Gwildor finds themselves on Earth, by Gwildor's creation, the Cosmic Key, a device that can open portals that lead to anywhere in the galaxy, which Skeletor requires in his goal for universal conquest. But when the Cosmic Key is discovered by Julie Winston and her boyfriend Kevin Corrigan, both unaware that Earth is about to become a battleground, as Skeletor and his vile minions arrives on Earth, as they go in pursuit of He-Man and his companions who are searching for the Cosmic Key so they can return to Eternia and defeat Skeletor.
After reading so many lauding reviews, as well as those who revile this film. I wasn&#39;t sure to add my own opinion in fear of simply repeating what already has been affirmed by so many. But here I go!<br/><br/>MotU is breathtaking and, yes, it&#39;s cheesy, but cheesy in a good way. It combines like all good pulp a perfect synthesis of pop-cultus mythology and some real poetry.(yes, I said poetry) The principal flaw or merit of the film take it as your allegiance veers towards the 80&#39;s cartoon, is the deviation from the Filmation rehashed, vapid, cell-recycling cartoon. (Don&#39;t get me wrong I have the entire DVD set even She-ra, so I love it, but now I enjoy it on a different level)<br/><br/>We don&#39;t get the epic world of Eternia, but here in a classic 80&#39;s twist, the Eternians are whiffed away to our world. (probalby to save a buck)Never the less the plot is acceptable, thanks to David Odelle, the screenwriter. A great part of the movie&#39;s power is due to the wonderful screenplay by Odelle. He creates characters with ease, using effective lines to paint their personality and like all those who love the film, I join the chorus is praising that Skeletor is one of the great screen villains of all time, thanks to David Odelle, of course Almost everything Skeletor says portrays regal villainy. (&quot;…Let them rot, let them rot), pomposity (&quot;The people must know I am Greyskull…&quot;), rage (&quot;You are all aware of the penalty for failure!&quot;) Vanity (&quot;I demand the destitution and loneliness of scorn, it is my right, my destiny!&quot;), delusion (just see his god-speech and you&#39;ll know what I mean, best villain speech ever) and even Loneliness (&quot;Tell me about the loneliness of good He-man, is it equal to the loneliness of evil?&quot;) Of course the lines written by Odelle are transformed into a tour-de-force portrayal by Frank Langella, everything is fantastic about this role, form his dark brooding voice to wonderful overly dramatic gesticulation. (My friends and I have endless fun, quoting and impersonating Skeletor.) He-man on the other hand is dramatically underwritten, even the stand of between Skeletor and the muscle-bound hero, the blond Scandinavian has little to say. But you&#39;ll have fun to see Dolph Lundgren speaking his lines with a thick accent and believe me it just as much fun as Arny.(to bad He-man has no cheesy one-liners <br/><br/>The movie is also greatly helped by a fantastic score by Bill Conti. There&#39;s an amazing main-theme that in all it&#39;s triumph and victorious blazing seems to put the Superman theme to shame to which it bears similarity there&#39;s great action music with beautiful trumpet &quot;solo&#39;s&quot; and there&#39;s the majestic pompous theme for Skeletor (that develops as the movie progresses and reaches it climax during Skeletor&#39;s bombastic travel to our world)<br/><br/>If you want a sci-fi/sword-n-sorcery flick (those two are never combined enough) and a trip to the eighties in all it&#39;s glory (watch Krag&#39;s hair and you&#39;ll know what I mean), and are a sucker for a lager than life villains that takes center stage in a film, I think you will enjoy this movie. So gather your friends, pop a dutch-beer and chew down on pizza as you are whisked away into the world of the film version of Masters of the Universe. <br/><br/>I have the power!
This is one of those movie franchises that never quite got off the ground to say the least, and one that many of the cast would probably like to wipe off their CV.<br/><br/>Surprisingly, many of the cast have now gone on to big success in either TV or movies. Courtney Cox is now an international super-star, Robert Duncan McNeill has found success in Star Trek: Voyager, and Christina Pickles has now carved out a good career in Friends and with such movies as The Wedding Singer and Romeo &amp; Juliet.<br/><br/>This, then is a true example of what struggling actors will do for money and recognition because this movie pays very little attention to the childrens TV series on which it is based, and the result is a laughably dreadful film with little plot and a dreadful script.<br/><br/>The only reason to watch this is to view the future stars as they were before they were stars.
I'm not going to lie to you here, this movie is a steaming pile of you-know-what. The acting is horrendous, the story is the most cookie-cutter clone of every movie after Star Wars as you can get, and the effects are downright laughable. Even an easy effect such as a laser blast looks bad here.
Masters of the Universe is based on a popular cartoon called &quot;He-Man and The Masters of the Universe&quot;, the cartoon, itself is based on a toy franchise created by Mattel. Pig Boy was played by Richard Szyponder. Richard Szyponder was given a small part in the film. After winning a competition, where Richard got to visit the set and meet the cast and director. The executives at Mattel wanted director Gary Goddard to give Richard a part in the film and Richard was put in makeup and custome, as a servant of Skeletor, Pig Boy and is seen handing Skeletor his staff, when returning from Earth with the subdued He-Man. We see the bottomless pit beneath the throne room, which is filled with red water, which Skeletor fell into, in the climatic final battle with He-Man. Skeletor surfaces and says &quot;I&#39;ll be back!&quot; which ends in a freeze frame and fades to black. The extra scene was supposed to set the stage for the sequel &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot;, but since the film didn&#39;t do very well at the Box Office, the sequel was dropped. The script for &quot;Masters of the Universe 2&quot; had been written, but was rewritten and became the script for the 1989 Jean-Claude Van Damme sci-fi action film Cyborg. You are right, in the cartoon, He-Man never killed anyone, which was a &quot;No!&quot; for a cartoon aimed at children. But Masters of the Universe which was darker than the cartoon, which the film is based on, was an action movie and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops, which were written as robot warriors, were created for He-Man to smash, fight and kill and Skeletor&#39;s crack troops are the only people He-Man and his companions kill throughout the movie. It&#39;s assumed they were killed by Skeletor, when Skeletor used the cosmic key to enter the city and break into Castle Grayskull. Gwildor had a secret passage in his home, which led to caverns beneath Castle Grayskull. Frank Langella was offered the role of Skeletor and Frank Langella decided to take the role of Skeletor, because he wanted to do it for his son Alex, whom was a fan of He-Man and Langella had felt Skeletor was a role he couldn&#39;t refuse. Frank Langella admitted in an interview that Skeletor was his favorite role.
